Storyline

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today arrived to Juba ahead of South Sudan’s declaration of independence on Saturday.

Noting the importance of the occasion for all the people of South Sudan, Ban said that the declaration of independence had “great meaning and implications for all the countries in the region.”

He recognized that the people of South Sudan had come a long way, “but independence will be just a starting point” and that they have to make South Sudan “a resilient and prosperous sustainable country, democratically mature.”

South Sudan's independence follows a referendum held in January in line with the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), the 2005 accord that ended the decades-long North-South civil war in Sudan.
