Traditional dancers, clad in their best cultural outfits, drummed and danced the day away as they engaged the masses.

The arrival of President Salva Kiir saw the unveiling of a memorial statute in memory of the late John Garang and other martyrs who had passed on during the war. The ecstatic crowd waved and applauded the unveiling, an indication that they would still remember John Garang who fought in a two decade-long war against the north.

The declaration of independence for South Sudan is a historic time for the country as it marks the end of a comprehensive agreement period signed between two foes after a bitter war which left millions dead and thousands of others displaced.
