Storyline

South Sudan on Sunday (10 July) unveiled its first national football team when they played against Kenyan team, Tusker Football Club.

The team was introduced to close to 1,500 fans who packed the recently renovated Juba stadium and after singing the country’s new national anthem the match kicked off.

South Sudan scored the first goal of the match and ecstatic fans, waved and cheered their team on, waving flags which reflected the team’s colours.

The South Sudan football team is made of 40 players who have been at camp training as a team for about 15 days.

The team is drawn from footballers who represent different football teams from across several States of South Sudan and others who play for other international teams. They will disband after this first match and will continue with their league matches across the States.

Kenya’s Tusker FC scored three goals against the one and only goal by South Sudan national Team. The South Sudan team was initially supposed to play Kenya’s National team, but plans changed.

For the South Sudan team, this was just the beginning of greater challenges to come, and as a young team, they look forward to more competitive matches and much more support from fans and sponsors.
