Storyline

The Central Bank of South Sudan on Monday (18 July) launched the South Sudan Pound at an event which was attended by the South Sudan President Salva Kiir.

At the event, it was announced that the newest currency in the world will be distributed throughout banks in South Sudan in both urban and rural areas.

South Sudan declared its Independence on 9 July and as part of its move towards statehood, a new currency has been introduced into the country.

At the event, President Kiir urged South Sudanese to bring their money back home.

After the launch at the Central Bank grounds, which also saw the President symbolically exchange some of his notes, hundreds of customers thronged various banks to exchange their old notes for new money.

The new South Sudan pound in circulation has a portrait of the late John Garang on it and has an equal value to the Sudan pound.

The notes are being printed in a foreign country and will continue arriving on cargo planes.
