Storyline

Somalia is a country on the move – with one quarter of its people uprooted by decades of war and the worst drought in 60 years. Now famine has just been declared in the south. More than 160,000 Somalis have fled into the region so far this year. But 1.5 million others do not have the means to go so far. Stuck within the country, they run in different directions – towards food, to where there is relative peace. Tukaay fled Baidoia in central Somalia with eight children in tow.

SOUNDIBTE (Somali) Tukaay Siyaadow Isaak, Internally Displaced Somali:
“Our livelihood depended on the rain. And the rain stopped. The livestock and whatever else we had, died because of the drought. How can we survive? So we ran for our own survival.” They travelled for 20 days and 600 km for this – a life patched together by cardboard. Home is now a makeshift tent in

Galkayo, in Bulo Kontrol settlement for internally displaced people.

SOUNDBITE (SOMALI) Tukaay Siyaadow Isaak, Internally Displaced Somali:

“We just followed our destiny to come here. And we now depend on aid from others.”

UNHCR is increasing aid deliveries within Somalia. But without a breakthrough in security and funding, hungry and war-weary Somalis will continue to move.
