UGANDA / BREASTFEEDING WEEK

Every year in Uganda, the lives of hundreds of thousands of children under the age of five are lost to preventable illnesses like pneumonia and diarrhoea. Breastfeeding provides a free and effective way for a baby to get the valuable nutrients it needs for a healthy life and to prevent these killer diseases. This week is World Breastfeeding week. Storyline

UNICEF and its partners are reaching out to mothers like Margaret in rural Uganda, who have recently given birth, to educate and inform them on the benefits of breast feeding.
SOUNDBITE (Runyakitara) Margaret Buriungu, mother of five:
“I think that with breastfeeding, the baby grows well, is healthy and doesn’t get sick as often.”

Dr. Richard Sekitoleko runs a health center on the outskirts of Kibiito in Western Uganda. He has managed to see first-hand the benefits of that come with breast feeding.
SOUNDBITE (English) Dr Richard Sekitoleko, local medial officer:
“So when I look at breast milk, I look at it as a wonderful substance that has all the nutrients. There is nothing you can replace it with.”
A mother’s milk cannot be substituted, especially in countries like Uganda, which are suffering from high malnutrition rates and rising food prices. Breast milk can and will save the lives of many babies in Uganda and around the world.
