Storyline

In Kenya, the Dadaab Refugee Complex, made up of three camps, continues to grow. It is a now small city.

An average of almost 1,500 refugees arrive every day, up from 1,300 a day in July, bringing the number of new arrivals to over 116,000 since January.

So great are the numbers that many of the new arrivals have had to set up outside the camp limits.

Shukri Abdi Sieki left southern Somalia with his six children after his herds died. They walked to Dadaab only to find that the camp was overflowing. So initially the family lived on the outskirts. Now they are being relocated to the Extension at Ifo Camp.

SOUNDBITE (Somali) Shukri Abdi Sieki, 45 years old, Somali Refugee:
“Where I came from I was living under a tree. But now I am happy here because I have a shelter and I will be able to receive water, food and good care.”

In the last two weeks, more than 12,000 refugees have been moved to the Extension. But officials know that this camp too will soon be full. So, another one is being prepared.

By the end of November, UNHCR plans to move 180,000 refugees to these new camps.

Living on the outskirts was far from ideal but with Ifo Extension people are being moved to safer ground.

SOUNDBITE (English) Emmanuel Nyabera, Spokesperson, UNHCR Kenya:
“They have access to water; access to good sanitation and then the place is more planned, so in-terms of security at least they will be more secure. We have police patrols here all the times, even at night. So here they will lead better life than where they were at the outskirts.”

Hawa Hassan worked in the family farm after her husband died in the war but insecurity and drought forced her to come to Dadaab. At first she shared a tent on the outskirts, now she is inside the camp limits and still living with others.

SOUNDBITE (Somali) Hawa Hassan, 50 years old, Somali Refugee:
“This is not my tent. I am sharing with my relatives who welcomed me when I arrived, since I had no where to go. I am waiting for UNHCR to give me one.”

Many refugees walk for weeks to reach aid in neighbouring countries only to arrive dehydrated and exhausted but at least here there is a measure of safety and assistance.
