SOUNDBITE (English) Jeff Bates, Polio Communications Officer, UNICEF:
“The reason why we focus on polio now instead of the other diseases for eradication is because polio is eradicable. It’s something that we have the means, the technologies and opportunity to stop forever.”
STOP volunteers provide vital support for the development, implementation and evaluation of campaigns in the field, linking cultural understanding to health data.
SOUNDBITE (French) Raabi Diouf, STOP Volunteer:
“My responsibilities here are to supervise the social mobilization of polio consultants nationally and to give technical support to the government. When I arrived I thought that not much was being done in the area of social mobilization, but I’ve realized that they are actually well organized.”
STOP volunteers know that 100 percent of children who have not been vaccinated are at risk of contracting polio and that effectively immunizing all children every time is the only way to eradicate polio.
With the highest number of unvaccinated children in the world and poor health care infrastructure, there is desperate call to action on the frontlines. Immunizing all children every time is the only way to eradicate polio.
