Storyline

Al Adala is a little less than five minutes from Mogadishu International Airport. Yet it is a world away. This settlement is currently home to 13,000 displaced Somalis mostly from the southern region of the country.

SOUNDBITE (Somalia) Gedi Mohamed, displaced Somali:
“It took us days to travel from our home in Tugenhoose to here. Two days from home to Dinsor region and another three to here.”

This settlement is less than two months and it is already congested. And having arrived with little in hand the needs of these displaced are great. There are also some serious health concerns.

Somali’s isolation over the last two decades means that many of the children are not vaccinated and some have suspected measles. Aid agencies are also worried about the spread of cholera.

On Saturday, the United Nations Refugee Agency’s (UNHCR) third aid flight to the war-torn city landed bringing more supplies for the displaced. Emergency kits with plastic sheets, kitchen set and sleeping mats were unloaded.

High energy biscuits were also brought in 47,000 boxes of them. Distribution to over 500 families took place shortly after with each family receiving one kit. It will make a big difference says Gedi.

SOUNDBITE (Somalia) Gedi Mohamed, displaced Somali:
“We had nothing. We faced problems. We have no money or anything. We have nothing.”

UNHCR plans to continue these distributions until most of the population in need has been reached.

SOUNDBITE (English) Bruno Geddo, Representative, UNHCR Somalia:
“We will finish distributing it all between now and next week. Our overall plan for Southern Somalia is to reach 400,000 people by the end of August. Right now, the first is to try and alleviate the biting of the famine, provide immediate humanitarian relief and mitigate the need for hundreds of thousands to cross the border into Kenya, which is already congested.”

The militant group Al Shabaab withdrew from Mogadishu just over a week ago. This brought about much needed respite in the fighting.

Meanwhile UN agencies and NGOs are rushing to bring assistance to the nearly half a million displaced living in and around Mogadishu.
