“Famine and hunger has always been an issue for all human beings in the world. World Food Programme (WFP) has contacted me to be an Ambassador. I know that about 1billion, their daily food intake is less than a cup. WFP gave me a cup made by Somali and Kenyan people. When I look at the cup everyday, I am reminded about the people’s daily meals fill less than a cup.”

Storyline

Martial arts champion and actor Jet Li attended an event jointly organized by the Chinese Wushu Association and the Permanent Mission of China to the United Nations (UN).

Jet Li, who used to be the Goodwill Ambassador for the World Health Organization, had worked to raise awareness of the health of populations in the wake of disasters.

He has personally experienced the Southeast Asian tsunami in the Maldives, the 2008 earthquake in Sichuan and the 2009 Typhoon Marakot in Taiwan and witnessed the breakdown in healthcare and consequences for victims of these disasters.

At an interview with the UN before the event, Li talked about the famine in Somalia saying “famine and hunger has always been an issue for all human beings in the world.”

The event, which took place at the General Assembly hall at the UN yesterday (18 Aug), included a two-hour long martial art or wushu performance.

The performance, with the theme "peace, friendship and health,” featured more than 20 wushu champions from China who used weapons such as sabres, swords and spears.

Moved by the experience, Li decided to put aside his film career for a while to set up a charitable foundation. Since then, he and his One Foundation have provided emergency response following natural disasters and promoted the role that everyone has to play for their own well-being and that of their communities.

He called on the international community to “give a little to our global family.”
