Storyline

Lina is an entertainment worker at a karaoke parlour in Phnom Penh and is aware of a possibly job hazard - HIV.

SOUNDBITE (Khmer) Lina, Entertainment Worker:
“Of course it’s a risk but since we are working here, we know about it and should be prepared to protect ourselves.”

Cambodia has reduced its HIV infection rates with effective prevention programmes for people who sell sex.

It is also one of only eight countries in the world to provide lifesaving treatment to more than 80 percent of people eligible.

Progress is occurring across Asia and the Pacific.

New HIV infections are down by 20 percent.

China has a large population of injecting drug users. The country has gone from zero tolerance to actively preventing HIV transmission among drug users.

But the gains are fragile.

India has stepped up services for sex workers.

But its programmes to protect men who have sex with men are still too few.

The Pahal Foundation provides services to about 1100 men who have sex with men.

Across the region, HIV epidemics among men who have sex with men are growing.

Unless countries scale up efforts where they are most needed, the impressive gains made in the last decade will be lost.
