Storyline

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s new special representative for Libya Ian Martin briefed the press on the new support mission to the North African country saying that the organization is already poised to implement its support to the new Libyan Transitional Council.

Earlier this week, Ban had announced Martin’s new responsibilities as the head of the UN support mission (UNSMIL) after the Security Council authorized the formation of UNSMIL for an initial three months to help the new Libyan authorities in their reconstruction efforts as the conflict winds down after months of deadly fighting between Government forces and rebels.

Although “the new Libya faces enormous challenges” Martin said “it faces them with many positive features.” He highlighted that fact that “the international community, whatever it’s past divisions over Libya, has now come together in full support of the Transitional National Council.”

As for the international community’s support, Martin said that Ban had highlighted three main areas of focus – “national ownership, speed of response and effective coordination.”

Last Friday, the General Assembly voted to seat the NTC as Libya’s representative at the Assembly during its current 66th session, including the high-level segment that begins on Wednesday. The decision follows a report by the Assembly’s credentials committee.
