“This is not a short term crisis. We need to be there dealing with the emergency at least till next July but also there has to be better long term development support across the board. There are development opportunities that can help to address the recurrent droughts that the region is facing and its time to really invest solidly in them to stop Africa and the Horn of Africa getting through this continued cycle of drought.”

Mark Bowden, the United Nations (UN) Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, and the UN Development Program’s (UNDP) Resident Representative for Somalia commenting on the famine and drought situation in the Horn of Africa said yesterday (23 September) that the present situation was “not a short term crisis”. And that the organization needs to be in the region dealing with the emergency “at least till next July”. Bowden added that there also has to be a better long term development support across the board.
He also said that there were development opportunities that could help to address the recurrent droughts that the region was facing “and its time to really invest solidly in them to stop Africa and the Horn of Africa getting through this continued cycle of drought”, Bowden said.
