Storyline

While in Libya’s capital Tripoli yesterday, United Nations (UN) General Assembly President Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser and Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon visited a mass grave site as well as talked with the families of the pro-revolution sympathizers who were killed there.

Their unannounced visit to Libya follows the National Transitional Council’s (NTC) declaration of the full liberation of the country eight months after the popular uprising and just days after the death of long-time leader Muammar Al-Qadhafi.

Both Al-Nasser and Ban pledged the continued support of the UN to help Libya on its important journey of reconciliation, reconstruction and democracy.

The UN has a mission on the ground, headed by the Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Libya, Ian Martin, to support the Libyan people and their authorities in areas such as elections, a new constitution, human rights, public security and the control of weapons.
