Storyline

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today (16 November) visited the Thai capital Bangkok where he met with the country’s Prime Minister and also saw for himself the effects of the massive floods that had inundated large swathes of the country.

Earlier in the day Ban said at a news conference with Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, that the UN was working closely with the country’s disaster management agencies to tackle the flood emergency and expressed his sympathies for those who have lost loved ones and property in the disaster.

Later in the day Ban flew by helicopter over the areas affected by the massive floods that had inundated large swathes of the country.

At a press conference later in the day Ban told journalists that he was “deeply saddened and humbled by what I have seen by helicopter while travelling over these affected areas”.

“I am also very much sorry to hear of all the hardships from the victims”, he said.

At a round-table discussion on universal health coverage, the Secretary-General commended the Thai Government for its effective universal health-care programme which he said could be emulated by many other countries.

Ban also met with people who were evacuated from inundated areas.
