Storyline

UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador David Beckham visited a centre in Manila Friday that is home to more than a 100 boys and girls escaping different forms of neglect or abuse.

Conan was arrested on the streets when he was just seven and now he’s finding a passion for soccer. He hopes one day to play internationally, just like his hero.

SOUNDBITE (Tagalog) Conan, youth from centre:
“I am so happy, because he makes children happy and I want to be like him one day.”

Supported by UNICEF, the government run ‘Village for Youth’ program provides a comprehensive package of social services, including training in productivity skills.

The aim aimed at returning the children one day, to the kind of loving environment that only a stable home can provide.

“So I know how important it is. I have four children myself, and they depend on me, you know me and my wife. So, it’s so sad to see so many children that don’t have that support, that don’t have that love.”

It’s estimated that up to a quarter of a million children in the Philippines are living and working on the streets, part of a global problem that denies them their basic rights.

SOUNDBITE (English) Sarah Norton-Staal, UNICEF Child Protection Chief:
“Children who are living and working on the streets are not able to realize their full rights. They’re not simply to be able to enjoy their childhood. They are confronted with violence, the risk, the risk of sexual violence and abuse.”

At the centre they find safety through sports. The soccer coach Jess Landagan was a former street child.

“I connect the sports to their education. I can see the changes too, the changes in their lives.”
