6. SOUNDBITE (English) Luis Moreno Ocampo, Prosecutor, International Criminal Court (ICC):
“Russia was the first supportive of the resolution 1970 that was requesting justice in Libya and I think the way in which Mr. Qadhafi was killed creates suspicions of war crimes and I think that a very important issue. We are raising this concern to the national authorities and they are preparing a plan to have a comprehensive strategy to investigate all these crimes.”

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Luis Moreno Ocampo, Prosecutor, ICC:
“International justice is here to stay, it’s established, it’s different than national justice because when we request to arrest President Bashir the court knows how to do it and it’s complex and it will take time but the destiny is clear he will take justice. For me the problem, that’s why I urge the Security Council to implement measures in the next six month to have a plan, the issue for me is how to protect the victims.”

Storyline

International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor Luis Moreno Ocampo briefed journalists today at the United Nations (UN) in New York following a presentation to the Security Council.

He said that the court would continue investigating the first case against former Cote d’Ivoire president Laurent Gbagbo’s forces and that after that it would investigate crimes committed by the people currently in government.

Asked by a reporter about allegations by Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin about the involvement of the United States in Muammar Qadhafi’s death, he said that he thought that the way in which Qadhafi was killed “created suspicions of war crimes”. He noted that the ICC raised that concern with the Libyan national authorities and they plan to investigate the crimes.

Asked if the apprehension and transfer of Gbagbo to the court would serve as an example for countries to hand over indicted officials like President Omar-Al Bashir in Sudan, Ocampo said that “international justice is here to stay, and that “it will take time but the destiny is clear he (Omar-Al Bashir) will take justice.”

Moreno Ocampo will be succeeded by Fatou B. Bensouda of the Gambia who was officially elected on 12 December and will take over the prosecutorial job in mid 2012.
