The Vice President of Republic of South Sudan, Riak Machar announced today (20 December) that rebel leader Lt. General George Athor and one of his soldiers were killed in the Morobo County of Central Equatoria State on Monday (19 December).
Addressing the press in Juba, Machar said Athor was killed in Morobo County having infiltrated South Sudan after traveling from Rwanda via the Eastern Border area of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda in a bid to recruit in Central Equatoria State.
Machar appealed to all of Athor’s followers to heed to the amnesty declared by the President of the Republic on 9 July 2011, and reiterated the commitment of the government to the Agreement reached between George Athor Forces/South Sudan Democratic Movement and the Government of the Republic of South Sudan on 19 November 2011. He also called on all who rebelled against the government to lay down their arms and join the process of peace and development.
The vice President added that the body of Gen. George Athor was to be handed over to his relatives for burial.
Lt. Gen. George Athor, a dissident commander of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) and an unsuccessful ‘independent’ candidate for the governorship of Jonglei state, launched a self-proclaimed armed rebellion against the Government of South Sudan after the April 2010 gubernatorial elections.
