Storyline

The vice president of the Republic of South Sudan Reik Machar Teny visited Likuangole in Jonglei State today following an attack by the armed Lou Nuer which burned down many local homes in the Likuangole Payam. According to local reports, dozens have been killed.

His visit comes during high tension between Lou Nuer and Murle communities. Over the weekend UNMISS air patrols identified thousands of armed Lou Nuer youth preparing to attack Murle communities near Likuangole in Jonglei State.

The armed Lou Nuer youth captured Likuangloe on Tuesday, burning many local homes to the ground. Local authorities reported over five thousand armed Lou Nuer youth are now in full control of the district.
Machar addressed thousands of the armed young men, calling on them to stop the violence and immediately engage in a peaceful dialogue.

“Please give us a chance to go to Pibor and talk with the chiefs of Murule, what comes out of the meeting we will share with you but you have to wait for us in Byem.”

Tensions are high in Jonglei State following the recent attack and amid rumors of further inter-communal attacks.

Over the past months UNMISS has consistently called for an end to ethnic violence in the region. Head of the mission Hilde Johnson asked the government earlier this week to act quickly in order to avert a “major tragedy” and has deployed resources to prevent and mitigate conflict in the Lou Nuer, Murle and Dinka communities.

The UN estimates that fighting between the Murle and Lou Nuer communities in August killed about 600 people, wounded 850 and displaced 26,000.
