Storyline

South Sudanese President Salva Kiir Mayardit has announced that oil operations in South Sudan will be halted with immediate effect and that no crude oil belonging to his country shall flow through the pipelines on the territory of Sudan.

While addressing the National Legislative Assembly in Juba today (23 Jan) where he listed incidents in which he said Sudan had blocked ships from sailing out of Port Sudan and had separately constructed a tie-in pipeline designed to divert oil, Kiir said the diversions of his country’s crude oil had already disrupted revenues which were vital to the security and welfare of the people.

The decision and announcement to halt oil operations came during the Second Council of Ministers meeting held on Friday 20 January.

SOUNDBITE (English) Salva Kiir Mayardit, President, Republic of South Sudan:
“We unanimously decided that all oil operations in South Sudan should be halted with immediate effect and no crude oil belonging to South Sudan shall flow through the pipelines on the territory of the Republic of Sudan.”

President Kiir said that the crisis had reached an unacceptable stage and that South Sudan had no guarantee that oil flowing through Sudan would reach its intended destination.

He added that South Sudan will continue negotiations with Sudan on the oil under the auspices of the African Union until a fair agreement acceptable by both parties is reached.

SOUNDBITE (English) Salva Kiir Mayardit, President, Republic of South Sudan:
“We will continue to do everything possible to resolve the impasses with Sudan and to restore the flow of South Sudanese crude oil.”

Kiir also called on the National Legislative Assembly to support the decision reached by the Council of Ministers during the Friday January 20th meeting, on stopping the flow of oil.
Meanwhile, demonstrations in support of the decision were held in Juba town.
Paulino Misaka, an artist from Juba said that the petroleum in the South belongs to the South Sudanese and now the government has a right to build and use a different petroleum pipe line to a different country.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Paulino Misaka, artist:
“The oil should not be pumped out. Even if there is a need to walk, we will walk on foot. It is better to build our own pipes through another country and we can negotiate the amount and other necessary things.”
