Storyline

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon held his first press conference of the year at headquarters Wednesday as his second term as chief of the organization.

Ban noted that today (25 Jan) marked the one-year anniversary of the uprising in Egypt that led to the removal of the regime of Hosni Mubarak.

He congratulated the people of Egypt on their peaceful transition to democracy on yesterday’s (24 Jan) announcement of a partial lifting of the state of emergency in the country.

He encouraged the transitional authorities to pursue the peaceful and early handover of power to civilian government, to uphold human rights, to release political detainees and to accelerate the pace of reform.

Responding to whether he was planning to go to Damascus to prevent the risk of a civil war, Ban said that he was encouraged by the way the League of Arab States was going to resolve the Syrian issue through political solutions while also supporting the Security Council’s efforts.

On Iran’s ambitions for peaceful use of nuclear energy, Ban expressed his concern over the most recent report of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) indicating the existence of a military dimension to Iran’s plan.

Ban stressed that Iran had to prove that their nuclear program was for peaceful purposes and they should fully cooperate with the IAEA.

Asked about how seriously he took the in-fighting in Libya, Ban said that he was concerned and that the current government was trying to establish the rule of law through reconciliation and by also managing the proliferation of small weapons -which had been prevalent in that society- in close coordination with UNSMIL.
