Storyline

United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, Hervé Ladsous wrapped up his first official visit to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on 27 January.

During the four-day visit, Ladsous met in Kinshasa with several senior government officials, as well as members of the Congolese political opposition.

With the Presidents of the Senate and the General Assembly, he discussed “what we can do together for the future of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.”

In a meeting with Alexis Thambwe Mwamba, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ladsous addressed the current situation in the DRC in light of the elections that took place at the end of last year and exchanged views on the upcoming elections.

That discussion also touched on “the place and role” of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO), he said emphasizing that the mission’s priorities included “support for electoral processes… but also the protection of civilians, reform the security sector, a series of spots that the Security-Council of the United Nations is following with great attention.”

Following a tête-à-tête with Minister of Defense Charles Simba, Ladsous stressed that the Congolese army must “strengthen its potential to take over the mission and stop all this violence affecting civilians in general, and especially women, women who are victims of totally unacceptable violence.”

He noted that that effort was an ongoing process and “we encourage it again, in a spirit of partnership.”

Before heading to the eastern town of Goma for meetings with provincial and local authorities, Ladsous also met with the head of DRC Independent Electoral Commission (CENI) Apollinaire Malu Malu.
