Storyline

They hardly have enough to eat and their shelters are flimsy.

These Malian refugees escaped the fighting between the rebel Tuareg movement and Malian governmental forces.

Since mid-January, thousands have sought refuge in neighbouring countries like Niger. Moussa arrived with his two wives and five children in mid-February.

SOUNDBITE (Tamashek) Moussa, Malian Refugee:
“We came here because there are insecurity problems in Mali. We fled. We have been here for the past 15 days. People stole our cattle in Mali.”

Their needs are great.

SOUNDBITE (French) Valentin Tapsoba, UNHCR, West Africa:
“The people here want from us, water, food and shelter. UNHCR has deployed two planes which arrived with tents, 2500 tents. We have also brought in two truckloads of supplies, blankets, buckets and mats from our stockpile.”

Relief supplies were distributed to the families here. And more will be provided by UNHCR to refugees in other sites at the border.
