Storyline

Visiting a displaced people’s camp located in Renk close to the Sudan and South Sudan border in Upper Nile State, the Special Representative of the Secretary General (SRSG) for Children and Armed Conflict Radhika Coomaraswamy hailed the verdict by the International Criminal Court (ICC) which today (14 Mar) found Congolese warlord Thomas Lubanga Dyilo guilty of recruiting child soldiers.

Coomaraswamy was visiting a displaced people’s camp which is host to thousands of returnees from Sudan who are en-route to various states of South Sudan.

Speaking about the children in the camp, she said it was important that they are moved to their destinations before the rains which are expected sometime in April.

SOUNDBITE (English) Radhika Coomaraswamy, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict, United Nations:
“We have to quickly get them to their places of destination, whether it is in Renk or outside before the rainy season. That was very clear to me that has to be done. And when you ask the children they say they prefer to be in Khartoum – so it means that they really are suffering so we have to do something for them.”

On the ICC’s guilty verdict for Lubanga, Coomaraswamy said that it sent a clear message that there will be no more impunity for those who recruited children, whether in the Democratic Republic of the Congo or anywhere in the world.

Coomaraswamy hoped the Court would provide reparations to the victims and their communities to acknowledge the harm suffered and as restoration of their rights.

Yesterday (13 Mar), Coomaraswamy met with South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir and talked about the SPLA Action Plan signed on Monday (5 March) which commits the government of South Sudan to ensure there are no children within the ranks of the SPLA.
