The IMF Executive Board has approved a four-year 28 billion euro program to help Greece overcome the economic crisis. IMF spokesman Gerry Rice announced the deal moments after the Board decision.
“The IMF’s Executive Board today approved continued support for Greece’s ambitious economic program,” Rice said.
The financing for the second program with Greece is part the overall package by the European Union and the European Central Bank. The IMF’s 28 billion euro contribution will be paid out over four years. The approval of the program triggers the release of an immediate IMF payment of 1.65 billion Euros to Greece.
“The Board agreed new financing of 28 billion Euros over the next four years. This financing is part of the overall package of support from the Fund and Greece’s European partners,” Rice said.
The IMF’s participation in the program is at roughly the same levels it as in the previous program, which is now cancelled.
“The Board stressed that Greece’s continued reform efforts to improve competitiveness and restore economic growth will be key to overcoming the crisis,” Rice said.
