Speaking at a United Nations panel to mark the International Day against Racism, Reverend Jesse Jackson condemned all forms of racism saying it was immoral.
Jackson, who founded the Chicago-based Rainbow Push Coalition, also called for legal efforts to prevent racial discrimination.
“Racism is immoral, it is a sin,” he said, emphasizing that it was also unscientific because it was based on false claims of genetically-based measures of superiority and inferiority.
He urged that racial discrimination be made illegal as a deterrent to stop racist behaviour.
According to press reports, Jackson indicated today during his visit to Geneva that he was working to lead an international delegation of religious leaders to Russia and Syria to help find an end to the violence that has wracked the Middle East country.
