What the service providers and the IDP representatives have told me is that both in terms of food provision, in terms of water and sanitation, in terms of basic items for women's dignity all of this are lacking in this IDP settlement at this point. The situation is still very critical and we can not continue to let this happen and we need to really re-double our effort.”

A senior United Nations (UN) humanitarian official visiting a camp for displaced people near Somalia’s capital Mogadishu this week described conditions as “appalling” and warned that the situation was “still very critical”.
The UN Deputy Humanitarian Chief Catherine Bragg is on her first official visit to Somalia. She aims to take stock of the humanitarian challenges in the countries, and support national and regional efforts to promote disaster risk reduction including drought resilience and preparedness.

While in Somalia, from 8 to 9 May, Bragg met with Government officials and representatives from the Organization of the Islamic Conference and the Turkish Government in Mogadishu, highlighting the importance of partnerships in addressing Somalia’s humanitarian challenges. She also met with key humanitarian partners working in Somalia.
On 8 May, the Assistant Secretary-General visited the Zona K internally displaced people’s (IDP) settlement in the Horan district of Mogadishu to see first-hand the humanitarian conditions in which people live.

An estimated 2.51 million people or one third of Somalia’s population are still in crisis, the Assistant Secretary-General has said, urging donors to continue to support the Consolidated Appeal for Somalia (CAP), which is under a mid-year review that will be finalized in June.
Launched in December with input from 148 national and international non-governmental organizations and UN agencies, the 2012 CAP prioritizes life-saving assistance and building up sustainable livelihoods.
From Somalia, the Assistant Secretary-General will continue on to an official visit to Kenya from 10 to 12 May 2012.
