“They are smiling all the time while they play with us. Their background is not always good, they have bad stories. When I think about it I am so sorry, but I don’t need to worry about that. If there is something I can do here for the children and the country, just I will do it.”

“The Japanese are making the guard house, it is very nice little house, the night watchman will come and stay here. We are very very happy with what they are doing here. They come to play with the kids they also bring them some things and they also help us with construction.”

Saturday afternoon at an orphanage located in the heart of Juba and Japanese peacekeepers are volunteering with games and some basic construction.
Laughter echoes at the orphanage as these once abandoned children play games – oblivious of their past and the hard conditions they experienced before arriving at the home.
There are 35 female children here – some were once street children and others were abandoned as babies by their parents.
At the home, the children receive three square meals, a place to sleep and are enrolled at nearby
community schools so they can get a good education and can also mingle with other children from the community.

Since early April Japanese peacekeepers have been volunteering with activities at this orphanage every Saturday and Sunday.

The orphanage has been supporting street children since 2007 hoping to protect and reintegrate the children by providing physical, social and psychosocial guidance. The organization that runs the orphanage also advocates against the abuse of children by creating awareness on child rights.
Cathy Groenendijk who runs this orphanage with help from volunteers who drop in occasionally is glad of the partnership she has with the peacekeepers who come to the home every weekend.
Today, she is serving supper early because when it gets dark there is no electricity. The older children always give a hand. Before they start on any meal, they always sing a prayer.

Before the independence of South Sudan, a two-decade civil war between Northern Sudan and Southern Sudan left many children orphaned and homeless.
A team of 225 Ground Self-Defence Force engineers arrived in South Sudan early in the year to help in the construction of some roads in the capital.
