Storyline

The United Nations General Assembly today (8 June) elected Serbia’s Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic as the President of the upcoming 67th session of the Assembly.

In the meeting to vote on the President-elect this morning, a total of 190 ballots were lodged, with Jeremic obtaining 99 votes, against 85 votes received by the other candidate, Ambassador Dalius Cekuolis of Lithuania. One country abstained and five votes were invalid.

SOUNDUP (English) Ambassador Nassir Abdualziz Al-Nasser of Qatar, President of the 66th session of the General Assembly:
“Having obtained the required majority, his Excellency Vuk Jeremic has been elected President of the 67th session of the General Assembly.”

In his statement to the Assembly, the 36-year old President-Elect said he saw his success as a “tribute to the Serbian people”.

SOUNDBITE (English) Vuk Jeremic, Foreign Minister of Serbia and President-Elect of the 67th session of the General Assembly:
“We are a small developing country that belongs to no military alliance or political union. It is therefore truly honouring to receive the confidence of so many nations from all over the world.”

Jeremic said that a painful era had come to an end for his country.

Made up of all the 193 Member States of the United Nations, the General Assembly provides a forum for multilateral discussion of the full spectrum of international issues covered by the UN Charter. It meets in regular session intensively from September to December each year, and thereafter as required.
