Representatives all 193 member states, plus almost 100 Non-Governmental Organizations are meeting at the UN headquarters in New York this week to examine ways to increase protection for older persons.
The meeting is the latest in a series mandated by a resolution of the General Assembly which calls for an examination all aspects of the protection of the human rights of the elderly.
SOUNDBITE (English) Jill Adkins of Dementia South Africa: “Well, it is going well. I think that we are defining the issues more carefully. We've grown from the real broad issues and concerns about older persons to talking more specifically about what
can be done and what are the issues with the current normative system and how to move forward.”
There appears to be no consensus yet of the delegations on whether there is a need for a new convention or if the existing human right protections can be reinforced to help the elderly.
SOUNDBITE Christian Courtis of the UN High Commission for Human Rights: “We would like to see an informed discussion of the main issues and some concrete proposals about the strengthening of the protection of older persons which might include the possibility of a new instrument.”
A UN delegate said the discussion was important in itself.
SOUNDBITE, Rosemary Lane, UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs:” For us a success would be that we're bringing more people to the table; more member states, more civil society. We’re having more informed discussions.
And she just wanted to the spotlight to stay on the issue.
SOUNDBITE, Rosemary Lane, UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs: It important thing for us is to keep the dialogue going.
