Storyline

The United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights, Ivan Šimonovic today (14 September) said that high violence in Haiti was still a concern.

On a two-day visit to the Caribbean nation ending today (14 September), Simonovic toured the camp of Brazilian peacekeepers with the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) in Cite Soleil, north of the capital Port-au-Prince. He was briefed on the situation of the population of this area and how they are being supported.
Last night he participated in a patrol through ​​Cite Soleil with the Brazilian military.
After the night patrol, Simonovic said the “increase of violence, deaths in Haiti” was “a concern”. He also denounced a “lack of success in establishing a permanent electoral commission”, and called for this to be resolved democratically so that “well prepared and credible elections” can be held as soon as possible.
