The group of permanent Security Council members plus Germany known as 'P5+1' or ‘E3+3’ today (27 September) held a high-level meeting on the sidelines of the General Assembly to discuss Iran’s nuclear programme.
Speaking to the press after the meeting, the European Union’s foreign affairs representative Catherine Ashton said she had briefed the group on her recent contacts with Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili in Istanbul.
She said the meeting had “discussed at length the need for Iran to take action urgently as we considered the Iranian nuclear issue”, and that she would now be in touch with Iran again to “continue this process”.
Declining to comment on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s calls for a ‘red line’ for Iran in the General Assembly this morning, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius told reporters that the “main word is unity, unity, and to exert pressure”, and that “on these items, unity, pressure, and openness, the P5+1 is completely united”.
The P5+1, also known as the E3+3, are China, France, Germany, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
