11. SOUNDBITE (English) Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General, United Nations:
“Today the situation in Gaza is deeply alarming. The whole world is extremely and gravely concerned about what is happening there. Rockets aimed at military targets inside Gaza are killing and injuring civilians and damaging vital civilian infrastructures. In my meeting yesterday with the Prime Minister Netanyahu of Israel I expressed my profound concern. Palestinians everywhere are distressed about what is happening in Gaza. Like you my paramount immediate concern is for the safety and wellbeing of all civilians. I appeal to all, those commanding, bearing and operating weapons to respect international humanitarian law to ensure the protection of civilians at all times. This message has repeatedly conveyed on many occasions since the beginning of this crisis. I’m repeating it again. I reiterate my call for an immediate cessation of indiscriminate rocket attacks by Palestinian militants targeting Israel’s populated centres. This is unacceptable. Now is the time for diplomacy and stopping the violence. I have spoken to UNRWA representative in Gaza directly with him and I assured my commitment that we will do all what we can to provide humanitarian assistance.”

Storyline

The United Nations chief today (21 November) travelled to Ramallah in the West Bank in an effort to help bring about an end to the ongoing violence in Gaza and southern Israel.

Over the last days, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has met with various leaders in the region, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Egyptian Prime Minister Hisham Mohamed Qandil and the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Nabil Elaraby.

He has strongly urged the parties to avoid further escalation and work towards achieving an immediate ceasefire.

In Ramallah, he met with the President of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas and Prime Minister Salam Fayyad.

At a joint press conference with Abbas at ‘the Muqata’, the Palestinian presidential building in Ramallah, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said that in his meeting yesterday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu he had expressed his “profound concern”.

While noting that his “paramount immediate concern” was for the safety and well being of all civilians, he appealed to all those “commanding, bearing and operating weapons” to respect international humanitarian law and ensure the protection of civilians.

Ban also reiterated his call for an “immediate cessation of indiscriminate rocket attacks by Palestinian militants targeting Israeli’s populated centers.

He said, “this is unacceptable. Now is the time for diplomacy and stopping the violence”.

Ban also announced that he had spoken to UNRWA’s representative in Gaza and assured him of his commitment to provide humanitarian assistance.

The latest wave of violence – which includes rocket attacks against Israel from Gaza, and Israeli airstrikes on Gaza – began on 14 November.
