The United Nations humanitarian chief Valerie Amos today (27 November) wrapped up a three-day visit to Jordan, which has been hosting an influx of refugees from Syria.
During her visit she met two refugee families living in destitute conditions in a neighbourhood of the capital Amman, and went to two reception centres at the Jordan-Syria border where she met newly arrived refugees from Syria.
"The thing that I'm most struck by is how traumatised people are by their experiences with the violence and the conflict inside Syria itself, the long journey they've had to make here into Jordan and the worry that they have for the people that they have left behind," she said.
Amos visited Za’atri Refugee Camp in Mafraq, 80 kilometers north of the capital Amman and home to 31,000 refugees. On a tour of the facilities provided at the camp, the United Nations humanitarian aid chief visited a school supported by the United Nations Children's Fund.
Reflecting on meeting the young students, she said, "Visiting the school, seeing so many children who are happy on the outside, but talking to the teachers, talking to those who are trying to give them support, what they hear is a very different story".
Amos also met the King of Jordan, the Prime Minister and the Minister of the Interior and thanked them for their and the Jordanian people's support adding, "It's clear that the situation in Syria, which has gone on now for nearly two years, needs to be resolved."
