We will place them in positions that need to be covered and they will be placed based on the different experiences from the training. This is not the only training; we are planning several other training for the forces. We the Somali Police and AMISOM are in the process of rebuilding the Somali Police and we will make them as they were before the government collapsed.”

“This is a very important training program because, you are aware that the president has emphasized the need for security in Somalia. This group will form the first formed Police Units within the Somalia police force. So they are actually going for paramilitary training that will enable them to enforce law and order in Mogadishu and other parts of the country in Somalia.”

Storyline

Two hundred officers from the Somali Police Force (SPF) left Mogadishu, Somalia’s capital, on Thursday (January 17) for neighbouring Djibouti where they will participate in a two-month training course organized by the police component of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).

The 184 Men and 16 women will receive specialized training in public order management facilitated by AMISOM with funding support from the Italian government.

Institutions like the Somali police virtually collapsed during the decades of civil strife that engulfed Somalia. In August 2011 the Somali National Security Forces - with AMISOM support - pushed extremist fighters al-Shabaab out of the their bases in central and southern parts of the country.

AMISOM is now working closely with the SPF to build capacity and professionalism. SPF’s 5000 officers are currently being trained on basic police duties, human rights, crime prevention strategies, community policing and search procedures as well as running courses in traffic management and criminal investigation techniques.

While seeing off the team, AMISOM Police Commissioner Dr. Charles Makono appealed to the participants to make the most of the training and return home ready to implement their newly acquired skills in improving the security of Somalia.

Last month the SPF celebrated the 69th anniversary of its founding.
