Storyline

United Nations (UN) Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, Jeffery Feltman, today (30 January) visited the Horn of Africa nation of Somalia where he met with senior members of the Somali Federal Government.

Feltman met with the Somali Prime Minister Abdi Farah Shirdon as well as the Minister of Justice, Defense and Interior and the speaker Mohamed Osman Jawaari, in the capital Mogadishu.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Prime Minister Shirdon said he was pleased with the meeting and the focus that the international community is giving to Somalia.

The UN Under-Secretary General for Political Affairs added the he was happy with the progress made by the Somalis and that the UN was there to facilitate and support a “Somali process”.

In August 2011, the violent extremist group Al-Shabaab was pushed out of Mogadishu by the Somali National Army backed by troops from the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).

In September 2012, a new President was chosen in a United Nations-backed process which ended eight years of rule by the transitional government.
