7. SOUNDBITE (English) Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General, United Nations:
“There are so many young children around the world who are not as lucky, as fortunate as you are, studying in the United States. United Nations is working, is doing all that we can to help those people. You will be able to see and learn more from all these corners of the United Nations what we are doing, how we are doing. You will soon learn all this.”

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Monique Coleman, United Nations Goodwill Ambassador:
“The first thing is to use your imagination. Imagine the world as you would like it to be and know that with the help of these UN kids it can actually be that way. The second thing is to unleash your creativity. Basically that means to think of really new ideas, big ideas and small ideas but don’t keep them to yourselves, you share those ideas with your friends, your teachers and your family and the last and most important thing is to have fun. In fact a lot of what the United Nations does is about giving boys and girls, men and women and people everywhere a chance to have a great life and to have fun.”

Storyline

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the actress Monique Coleman, a UN Goodwill Ambassador, today (11 February) launched new tours of the UN headquarters complex in New York tailored specifically to children.

The idea, initiated by the UN tour guides themselves, grew out of wanting to improve the tour experience for children between the ages of 5 and 12.

Making the tours more attractive for children would not only lead to a better experience for them, their parents or teachers during the tours, it would also make it easier for the guides giving the tour, and of course - help the kids learn and understand more about the UN.

The aim is further to provide children with ideas for how they may stay involved after their visit to the United Nations.

While asking children to bring their friends, teachers, family, and parents to the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon told the children present at the launch that the UN was working to help people. He also told them that “you will be able to see and learn more from all these corners of the United Nations what we are doing, how we are doing. You will soon learn all this”.

Monique Coleman reminded children that a lot of what the United Nations did was “about giving boys and girls, men and women and people everywhere a chance to have a great life and to have fun.”
