Storyline

In a bid to increase awareness of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan’s (UNMISS) role and mandate among communities of Jonglei State, the mission conducted a one-day community outreach in Akuideng Boma, township of Jalle payam, about 60 kilometers from Bor town.

Organizers discussed the mandate of the UN mission, and its role in the protection of civilians and peace consolidation, as well as its role in fostering long term state building throughout South Sudan, particularly in Jonglei State. The role of community leaders in promoting peaceful co-existence among all communities in Jonglei State was also discussed.

SOUNDBITE (English) Fred Paul Civil Affairs Officer, UNMISS:
“The importance of the awareness today where we came is to explain to the grass root to know the mandate of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan.”

David, Maluak, Deputy Payam administrator for Jalle said that the work of UNMISS had been appreciated by the community, especially in areas like early warning system, as well as other assistance UNMISS had given to the area since its arrival to Jonglei.

“The work of UNMISS we appreciate it because they give us some ideas, they are giving some security, even report it to the government. That is a quick way of informing to the government.”

One of the participants, Rabaka Diing Chol said that it was too sad to witness conflict and instability for too long among communities of Jonglei State. She urged that the attacks stop, and that the work for peace begin.
