The aim of the rally was to generate greater awareness for prevention of violence against women.
The rally departed from UN Headquarters in New York and arrived at the Dag Hammarskjold Plaza on 47th Street, where participants had a chance to express their views about violence against women.
Mrs. Ban who opened the event said that “it may seem impossible to end all attacks on women and girls but when I look at you I know it is possible. This is a movement whose time has come.”
Reading a special message from Malala Yousafzai, the young Pakistani girl activist who was shot for being vocal about girls’ right to education, Susan Sarandon called for “a commitment today that we all work together, we make a commitment that we all work together, that we all fight for the rights of girls and we all work to send each and every girl to school”.
Stating that 50 percent of HIV positive women in sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia “were abused when they told others about there health status,” Christy Turlinton expressed her support for UN Women for Peace, while speaking out against violence against women.
And Kelly Rutherford said that violence against women was acceptable as a normal in many countries, and that women and girls with disabilities were more likely to be abused. She added that in the Democratic republic of Congo (DRC) “approximately eleven hundred rapes are reported each month with an average of 36 women and girls raped every day.”
UN Women for Peace is focused on supporting and funding UN humanitarian programmes for women in developing countries, and countries in conflict. Since its inception, UN Women for Peace has sponsored scholarships to benefit underprivileged women to study at the University for Peace.
