Storyline

Argentina’s Foreign Affairs Minister told reporters today at the United Nations that unfortunately, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon would not be able to carry out his good offices on the issue of the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands (Malvinas).

Héctor Marcos Timerman, briefed reporters accompanied by Bruno Rodríguez Parrila, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cuba representing the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC); Luis Almagro, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uruguay, on behalf of Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR); and José Beraún Aranibar, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of Perú, on behalf of Union of South American Nations (UNASUR).

Timmerman and the Latin American Ministers accompanying him held a meeting earlier in the day with Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to demonstrate the Latin American and Caribbean “unity” when claiming Argentina’s sovereignty over “the Falkland Islands (Malvinas) South Georgias, South Sandwich and the surrounding maritime spaces.

Timerman told journalists that “Unfortunately” Ban Ki-moon confirmed in that meeting that even though there was an existing UN resolution granting him the mandate to carry out good offices, and while Argentina had accepted such good offices, “the United Kingdom has rejected it”.

Timerman said it was “truly regrettable that existing forty United Nations resolutions, and one in particular granting authority to the Secretary-General to act so that both countries can negotiate a peaceful agreement over the sovereignty of the Islands that the United Kingdom once again has rejected such mandate.”

The Governments of Argentina and the United Kingdom have been engaged in a dispute concerning the sovereignty of the islands, located in the South Atlantic Ocean.
