Storyline

On the shores of the Euphrates River, close to the Birecik Damn, lies the ancient city of Zeugma.

Today, a different kind of history is being made. As a new city emerges.

A city of tents. Home to over 9,000 Syrian refugees.

This is Nizip Camp, one of 17 camps funded by the Turkish Government.

Mostafa fled Syria seven months ago with his wife and three sons. A decision he never thought he would have to make.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Mostafa, Syrian refugee:
“Before the war I had a good life, I had a barber’s shop. We were happy, even though my son is sick, I had a job and could provide for him. We were happy at home, we wanted to visit Turkey for a holiday, but the situation got so bad that we came here against our will, fleeing the war.”

Mostafa´s oldest son – Wisam – has cerebral atrophy and requires constant medical care.

The war in Syria denied him that. So Mostafa moved his family.

Even in Turkey getting the care Wisam needs has not been easy. The small camp clinic is not equipped to deal with long term illnesses.

Still, Mostafa has managed to get help for his son. And he finds comfort knowing that his family is safe.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Mostafa, Syrian refugee:
“We can sleep peacefully here, we don’t need to be afraid of the bombs, our neighbours are all family and they help with the kids , we are safer here than back home.”

As the numbers of refugees increase, so do their requirements, including of those of special needs refugees like Wisam.

Yet amidst the despair, hope still exists.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Mostafa, Syrian refugee:
“God willing there will be a solution and we will have peace. Hope and security is all we want.”

The future holds no promises of resolution. As this conflict enters its third year, a stalemate rules.

Mostafa is thankful for the help he has found.

At least for now, his son has access to doctors and medicines. His life has been made a little more comfortable.
