Storyline

Due to the fighting in neighboring DRC, Congolese refugees are arriving at Rwamyanja Refugee Settlement in Western Uganda in search for peace and security.

The UN team in Uganda and key partners have come together to support the Government in delivering much needed services to this vulnerable population. This includes shelter, health, education, protection, and water.

SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) Hudson Agaba, Sr. Field Associate, UNHCR:
“Obviously the UN is working with the health department, we have a health centre III, we are stocking it with medication, we are building infrastructures. And the WASH department - we have about 45 separate boreholes in the settlement .We're looking at livelihoods, we're giving them seeds for cultivation, so UN as a collective we are taking overall charge.”

New arrivals are registered and given basic non-food items that include jerry cans, blankets, plastic sheeting, and digging tools.

Babies are checked for malnutrition, and given basic immunizations.

SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) Hudson Agaba, Sr. Field Associate, UNHCR:
"This emergency, the Rwamwanja, the Congolese influx, has been a typical example of the UN working under one umbrella, because we've come together and we've kicked in through the emergency and we've provided the support and things are moving on."

Soon after arrival, refugees are allocated land so that they can slowly start rebuilding their lives in a safe environment.
