Storyline

After a meeting with representatives of Greece and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia in the dispute over the latter’s name, a United Nations envoy today (9 April) said that Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was ”very hopeful that a solution will be found.”

Matthew Nimetz, the Secretary-General's Personal Envoy, accompanied by the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia’s negotiator Zoran Jolevski and Greece’s negotiator Adamantios Vassilakis, told journalists he had presented “a new proposal” to both sides.

Nimetz pointed out that “until we reach a solution, then we haven’t reached a solution” and noted that negotiations were continuing.

Without giving any details, the Personal Envoy said that the new proposal was refined based on “the issues and objections and problems they had the last time around” and added that “hopefully we get a little closer to some solution here.”

The most recent UN-brokered talks on the name dispute were in New York at the end of January 2013.

Since 1999, Nimetz has been holding talks with the two sides and proposed compromise names in his capacity as the Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for the talks.

His efforts are in line with a UN-brokered interim accord reached in 1995 which details the differences between the two over the name of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, and obliges both Athens and Skopje to continue negotiations under the auspices of the Secretary-General to try to reach an agreement.
