Storyline

The magic and beauty of forests took center stage during the UN "Forest for People Awards" at the UN Forum on Forests in Istanbul. The awards for Forest Heroes, the International Forest Short Film Festival and the International Forest Photograph Awards focus on the dynamic and unique relationship between forests and the people who depend on them.
One "Heroe of the Forest" is 92-year-old Hayrettin Karaca from Turkey, a successful entrepreneur who established an arboretrum on his land in Yalova, which holds over 14.000 species and subspecies of trees and other plants and became the breeding ground of endangered plant species endemic to Turkey. Hayrettin Karaca is considered the 'grandfather' of the Turkish environmental movement - his NGO "Tema Foundation" mobilized 460.000 volunteers to plant more than 10 million seedlings.

Award winner Olga Lavrushko, 22, from Zaporizhzhya, Ukraine, is not a photographer - she studies engineering, is an explorer at heart and loves the forest.

Sebastien Pins from Namur, Belgium, directed his first theater play at eight and, fascinated with light, became a professional pyrotechnician at 20. Now he studies film and explores the forest through the eyes of a child.

Almir Narayamoga Surui is an elected chief and first member of the Surui tribe in the Brazilian Amazon rainforest to attend college. He created a "50-year-plan" to ensure the economic vitality of the Paiter-Surui, encompassing large-scale conservation efforts, reforestation projects and activities that offer economic alternatives to exploiting the forest.

Paul Rosolie is a naturalist and explorer. His current focus is the Madre de Dios region in the Amazon's "Wild West" in Peru. Setting up video "traps" there, he noticed an amazing variety of wildlife in a small spot of forest. Not only did the anteater want to lick the camera - five minutes after Paul changed the batteries one day, the camera captured a capital jaguar walking by leasurely.

Dr. Ariel Lugo has dedicated his life to the preservation of forests. He is the Director of the International Institute of Tropical Forestry, and his talent for environmental research is paired with passion for linking people and forests. His most recent project helps to prevent violence and promote healthy childhood development by encouraging children and youth in planting seasonal organic vegetables and native trees.
