Storyline

The central mosque sits majestically in the heart of Gaziantep, an industrial boomtown in south east Turkey. Located just over 100 kilometres from the Syrian border, Gaziantep is now home to a steady flow of Syrian refugees, escaping violence and war. Many arrive in dire need of assistance and are directed to local centres.

The Turkish government provides assistance and protection to over 260,000 Syrian refugees living in 17 camps and urban centres, like Gaziantep.

Zeinab fled Syria when her daily life in Halab became unbearable.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Zeinab, Syrian Refugee:
“We fled from the bombing and the war; it wasn't even safe to leave the house. There was no electricity, no bread, no petrol; we lived in the dark for months on end."

She lives in a small flat with her two sons but she has one son still in Syria.

She hasn’t heard from him in weeks and yearns for her family to be together again.

Zeinab is among the refugees who chose an urban settling over a camp. Meeting their needs has put great pressure on local municipalities.

Here the municipality has converted this cultural centre into an elementary school for 300 Syrian children. Seven-year-old Jouman is one of the students.

Her school in Halab was destroyed a year ago, her schooling had stopped until now.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Jouman, Syrian Refugee Child:
“I have benefitted so much from this school. The teacher teaches us everything, I'm so happy here."

Turkey is helping well over 100,000 Syrian children. Syrian teachers have been hired in an effort to keep up with the Syrian curriculum and help the children make up for lost time.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Areg, Syrian Teacher:
“When the kids first came, they had forgotten so much because their education had stopped, but they slowly got used to being mentally active again. The school is running well now and we are following the Syrian curriculum.”

At the registration centre, Zenaib receives her identity card. She has heart problems and suffers from diabetes. Her card will give her access to much needed medical car. Like the schooling for the children, her medical care provides some relief for a life in exile.
