“From the United Nation’s side I convey three strong messages, one as head of mission I have condemned the attack in the strongest possible terms and the need for a thorough investigation to find out what happened and hold perpetrators to account. Secondly, we have conveyed to the governor, and to colleagues here in Bor and in Jonglei State a reassurance that we remain undeterred by what has happened. Our mission continues and we will not be affected by what happened or intimidated by it. At the same time we need to make sure that the safety and security of our forces and of our staffs is secured. We are now putting in place measures to make that happen and I am here to convey to our national staff who also lost their dear ones, as well as to our forces that we are taking every possible step to secure their safety.”

“We are very happy that they have come and they have told us of their resolve to continue providing security which of course was the request of the government of South Sudan to see in to it that the UN peacekeeping forces are the deployed to the South Sudan and also to Jonglei State.”

A delegation of senior UN officials on Saturday (13 April) visited Jonglei State and met with local officials as well as with staff members of the United Nation’s Mission in South Sudan-UNMISS in the capital of Bor.
The delegation included the Special Representatives of the Secretary General for South Sudan (SRSG) Hilde F. Johnson; Anthony Banbury, Assistance Secretary General for Department of Filed Support Unit at the UN Headquarters, UNMISS Force Commander, O.K. Bajaj, Indian Ambassador to South Sudan and other senior UN Officials arrived in Bor, Jonglei State.
During their day-long visit, they met with local government officials and UNMISS staff members. The visit followed an attack on 9 April on an UNMISS convoy by unidentified assailants near the settlement of Gumuruk that killed 12 people.
Following a meeting with Koul Manyang Juuk, Governor of the State and his cabinet, Hilde Johnson told the media that despite the unjustified attack on the UNMISS convey, the mission would continue its work and will not be deterred by the attack.
Johnson further highlighted the Mission’s need to make sure that the safety and security of its forces and staff is secured.
Also addressing the media, Governor Manyang said he was glad of UNMISS’s reassurances to continue its vital work in State.
The delegation also met with Indian soldiers and national staff members who lost their colleagues and passed their condolences on behalf of the UN Secretary General and the entire UN family.
