Municipal and regional elections took place on Sunday, 21 April, across Côte D'Ivoire. National security forces worked alongside United Nations peacekeepers of the United Nations Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI) to provide a secure electoral environment.
The aim was to avoid the violence that followed presidential elections in November of 2010, where then incumbent, Laurent Gbagbo, refused to concede defeat at the polls to the challenger, Alassane Ouattara, who had obtained the most votes.
The municipal and regional elections were organized by the Ivorian Independent Electoral Commission. The UN mission in the country did not have a mandate from the Security Council to supervise the local electoral process, unlike previous presidential and parliamentary elections, but did provide significant security support. It also provided technical advise through UNOCI’s election cell.
Parliamentary elections were held in 2011.
