Storyline

Lesvos Island, Greece. A tourist destination…but increasingly also an escape route… for hundreds of refugees trying to get to Europe.

Most come by in small boats from Turkey, a short 12 nautical mile trip.

Mohammed and his mother made the trip twice the first time unsuccessfully.

They were fleeing Syria.

SOUNDBITE (English) Mohammed, Syrian refugee:
"One big boat came to us and hung the boat and took us to the border, the sea border between Turkey and Greece, and left us there. After that, one Turkish boat, it had a Turkish flag hung us and took us to Turkey."

Their second attempt was more successful…they went unnoticed by the patrols.

Arrest is a risk, so are smugglers and unseaworthy vessels

SOUNDBITE (English) Antonios Sofiadelis, Greek Coast Guard officer:
“Usually these kinds of boats can take only up to ten persons. But usually when people travelling, refugees are trying to come here, the boats are overloaded, overcrowded with thirty, sometimes fifty persons on board. So it goes very close to the surface of the sea. They can not be noticed by the patrol boats and this is a big danger for them.”

Ahmet and Hassan’s eldest brother, his wife and their three children were desperate to escape Syria.

It ended in tragedy. The family died in the crossing. A suitcase was found in the sea children’s’ shoes a few items of clothing this is all the brothers have now.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Hussan, Syria Refugee:
"When we recall the memory of our brother, I always think about the moment he died. Did he die before his children or they died in front of his eyes? How much did he suffer?”

The brothers will never know.

Since December two major boating accidents have killed 28 Syrians and Afghans including Omar and his family but still people come.

In the first three month of this year, almost 1,000 people have reached these shores undeterred by the dangers they faced to get here.
