Storyline

The Security Council today (2 May) unanimously approved a resolution establishing a new mission in Somalia.

The resolution sets up the UN Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) for an initial period of one year and will start deployment on 3 June.

Ambassador Elmi Ahmed Duale of Somalia told the Council that this was a “very important resolution” as it “ensures that Somalia and the Government of Somalia now will have only one door for dialogue and for support.”

UNSOM’s mandate, according to the resolution, includes support for peace and reconciliation efforts, assisting the Government and the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) with peace-building and state-building endeavours, helping the Government build human rights and rule of law capacities, human rights investigating and reporting, and coordinating international support.

On Monday Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon appointed Nicholas Kay, a diplomat from the United Kingdom, as his new Special Representative for Somalia.
