“All my family is still back in Syria. The lines are so bad I cannot talk to them. And my grandfather is sick and they are all are worried about his health. There is no-one here to look after him except me and I have to do everything for him.”

“Ali wasted 16 years in school. He lost all his life for no reason. He came here for us. He takes care of us. I have been living in a state of death for four years. I hate my life so much that if I had poison, I would take it but I cannot find any, my death is all the same to me, but I feel so sorry for Ali, he has sacrificed so much for me.”

19. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Ali, Syrian refugee:
“The situation in Syria is terrible everywhere there is bombing and killing. Yesterday my dad told me there were clashes and bombing in Qamashli airport and we were so worried. The situation there is terrible, they are bombing our city we were all crying when we heard this news.”

Ali is 16 years old.
He is one of 2 million Syrian children affected by the conflict.
A whole generation of refugee children are now scattered across the region.
lives disrupted, futures put on hold.
SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Ali, Syrian refugee:

Ali left his parents and brothers behind when his grandfather’s became critically ill.
As the oldest son in the family, it fell on Ali to bring his grandfather to Iraq.
They live in Domiz camp in the Kurdistan region of Northern Iraq.
Ali has been away from home for six months now
SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Ali, Syrian refugee:
“All my family are still back in Syria. The lines are so bad I cannot talk to them. And my grandfather is sick and they are all are worried about his health. There is no-one here to look after him except me and I have to do everything for him.”
Ali’s grandfather has cancer every week Ali takes him to Dohuk hospital to receive treatment. His grandmother also has health issues.
It is a sacrifice that Ali’s grandfather finds hard to bear.

The responsibility is a lot for one so young.
There’s also the burden of the bad news from home.

Children like Ali who continue to make the biggest sacrifices in this war separated from their families and loved ones they are forced to confront harsh realities of this ongoing conflict.
Ali dreams of the day that he will be re-united with his parents back in Syria this keeps him going through the long days of exile.
